Mel was a B-17 navigator stationed in England during WWII.  He flew 33 combat missions, including targets in occupied France and Germany.  On one bombing run into Germany, he was the lead squadron navigator for a 1000+ aircraft formation.  On mission 27 over Germany his aircraft was heavily damaged by enemy flack and crash-landed near Reims, France, with all crew members surviving.  They were helped by the French underground and eventually made it back to England.  Other decorations received by Mel include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (3OLC), and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
